Introduction:

The New School of Music, Austin has a rich history rooted in passion for music and education. What began as a dream in the bustling jazz scenes of Boston and NYC evolved into Austin’s first community music school, enriching the lives of countless students and musicians.

The Inspiration (Late 1970s – Early 1980s)

Richard and Paula Spencer’s experiences in Boston and NYC.

While performing and teaching in the northeast, Richard and Paula Spencer were inspired by the vibrant community music schools in Boston and New York City. These schools provided accessible, high-quality music education and fostered a sense of community among students and educators.

The Beginning in Austin (1982)

Founding the first community music school in Austin.

Seeking a change from life on the road, the Spencers returned to Austin and founded the New School of Music, Austin in 1982. Their vision was clear: to create a space where anyone could access exceptional music education.
The school quickly grew, with over 20 teachers and 200+ students, offering seminars with renowned jazz musicians like Larry Coryell, Gene Ramey, and Dave Liebman.

Growth and Partnerships (1982 – Late 1980s)

Collaboration with community organizations.

The New School partnered with institutions like the University of Texas, Austin Community College, and the Music Umbrella to bring world-class musical experiences to Austin. These collaborations enriched the city’s music scene and inspired students to pursue their musical dreams.

Transition and Change (Late 1980s)

Transition of ownership and challenges.

In the late 1980s, Richard pursued an MBA at UT Austin, leading the Spencers to sell the school. While the new owners continued its mission, the recession of the late 1980s led to its closure.

A New Chapter (2013)

Relaunching the school as a nonprofit.

In 2013, the Spencers reacquired the rights to the New School of Music name and relaunched it as a nonprofit organization. Their goal was to serve the Austin community once again, providing high-quality music education to students of all ages and backgrounds.
